Welcome! This is the Merbears website, the official home of the Merbears®. My name is Verity Roennfeldt, here is my story and the latest Merbear book news .... Back in the 1990's I created my first Merbear. I had only just discovered the wonderful world of Artist Bears, and was determined to create an Artist Teddy Bear that people would want to own; a unique bear that was different from all the rest. I was fascinated with that legendary creature, the Mermaid. This inspired me to design my first Merbear, part fish and part teddy. After a few shaky attempts, I stumbled onto the right combination. Soon after that first Merbear was created, I was designing unique and special Merbears for many eager bear collectors. What made my task so much fun, and the Merbears so unique is that; with each design, a new character emerged with its own unique story. With the addition of each merbear story, their 'world' emerged and grew full of exciting adventures. The wonderful aquatic environment we lived in on the southern coast of Australia, was a fantastic inspiration and motivated me to pepper the stories with an environmental flavour. For my small children it was a wonderful opportunity to teach them how to care for the aquatic environment while fuelling their little imaginations with Merbear 'magic'.
Lorraine The wonderful support of my family and talented illustrator - Lorraine O'Brien, allowed publisher Writing Plus to launch the six Merbear childrens picture books. They are called the 'Merbear Adventures'; each one is a separate story, and complimented by the others in the series. The books are especially designed to engage younger readers (ages 4-10), and teach about caring for our oceans and for one-another. Each book has an activity page with craft ideas, discussion topics and word studies for parents and children. The Latest Merbear News We hope to bring you the next adventure very soon. Hint- As we enter 2007, I have nearly finalised writing the first exciting Merbear chapter book, and Lorraine has been hard at work creating the most beautiful illustrations. Wow! The Merbear Adventures have been reprinted in 2007 in both hard and soft cover, and are now available. They look great, and we're really excited about their new design (with even bigger pictures!). Lorraine and I know you'll love them! Lorraine and I visit school and community groups to promote the books and conduct craft workshops, so please contact us with visitation requests.
